Punk and Indie Gems -- February 28th, 2007

For this week's playlist I tried to sort it so that the order sounds as natural as possible, and also so that the quiet and loud songs were segregated. Other than that there's not much of a theme. More loud songs than quiet ones I guess.

Here it is:
1 -- Sonic Youth - Incinerate -- off of their new album which is amazing
2 -- The Flaming Lips - My Own Planet -- their old stuff back when they were punk-ish
3 -- Q and not U - Everybody Ruins
4 -- Mission of Burma - Fun World
5 -- Ampere - The Jailors Speak of Freedom -- arty screamo from amherst
6 -- Zs - Nobody Wants To Be Had Balk -- avant garde rock from NYC. They played here earlier this semester. This song is on their myspace.
7 -- Trail of Dead -- Another Morning Stoner
8 -- Arcade Fire -- Keep the Car Running -- new song
9 -- French Toast - Back Off Or Els -- related to Fugazi somehow, I forget how. Drummer's brother's band or something
10 -- Modest Mouse - Dirty Fingernails -- the first song I ever heard by them
11 -- Joy Division - Day of the Lords
12 -- Ride - Nowhere -- I grabbed the album after I heard 'Vapour Trail' from a playlist from the Perks of Being a Wallflower
13 -- Liz Isenberg - The Bad Ones -- singer/songwriter from somewhere around Amherst. This song is on her myspace.
14 -- Pavement - Spit On A Stranger
15 -- Radiohead - Palo Alto

Punk and Indie Gems -- Valentine's Day playlist

This playlist is a tentative list of songs I'm playing later today (1pm). I'm playing a few songs from the new bins also, and I'll probably update this list to include those later.

For valentine's day, I made up a playlist of songs about love (pro or con):
1 -- fugazi - do you like me -- song by fugazi about unrequited love. maybe the only song fugazi ever wrote about love
2 -- ryan michael kiley - hallelujah -- a cover of a song written by leonard cohen and played by a friend of mine at an open mic. i don't know if it's technically about love, but the tone fits the list
3 -- paul baribeau - strawberry -- a plain folk love song referencing strawberries
4 -- pearl jam - elderly woman behind the counter at a small town -- person leaves town, returns many years later
5 -- the evens - if it's water -- "I'm alive your alive we make warmth when we desire. if its water and it's not wet it could be ice so heat it and you can soak me again"
6 -- rem - you're in the air -- about a relationship, not really ideal but they fall in love anyway. at least that's what i got from it
7 -- the pixies - la la love you -- straightforward love song
8 -- nofx - monosyllabic girl -- straightforward love song
9 -- jawbreaker - chemistry -- about wanting someone who's dating someone else
10 -- husker du - i'll never forget you -- a bad breakup
11 -- smiths - i want the one i can't have -- see title
12 -- gang of four - anthrax -- gang of four wrote this as an anti-love song (which is why it's full of feedback). the narration is about groups that write love songs and why.
13 -- morphine - i know you (part 2) -- straightforward love song
14 -- mood of defiance - girl in a painting part 2 -- i don't know if this is actually a love song or not, but i found it in a compilation album called "life is beautiful so why not eat health foods" so it seemed to fit the mood
15 -- replacements - i will dare -- about meeting people

8 -- modest mouse - grey ice water -- i could have played their new song but i didn't. nothing against their new song, i just like this better.

12 -- flipper - the way of the world -- old no-wave band from california
13 -- rem - lotus
14 -- blitzkrieg - blitzkrieg -- one of the songs metallica covered on garage inc.

Punk and Indie Gems -- January 24th playlist

hey everyone, my show is on again in the new semester at exactly the same time as it was last semester! sorry about the delay getting my playlist up. onto my playlist:

i lost my playlist but here's most of what I played. I also played 'i buy the drugs' by electric six and another song i can't remember.

1 -- raven - don't need your money -- I got a 2-disc used metal compilation album from my local record store over winter break called 'new wave of british heavy metal '79 revisited' and this was on it! the whole thing is pretty awesome and I think someone from metallica compiled it in 1990, but I'm probably wrong. Lars Ulrich wrote something in it though
2 -- bomb the music industry - even winning feels bad -- i started listening to this album because it was on mitch clem's 5 best albums of 2006 list. and because the band offers it for free on their website!
3 -- the evens - cut from the cloth -- another song from the evens' new cd. i missed seeing them in concert by a few days :(
4 -- french toast - pattern -- dischord band with synth and guitars. it sounds a lot like joy division to me, but i haven't heard a lot of them
5 -- interpol - pda -- song i like from interpol that i'm trying to learn how to play
6 -- REM - sad professor -- i also bought this cd 'Up' by REM from my local record store. it's REM's most ambitious album and I've heard (at least wikipedia says) it influenced Radiohead's Kid A. i like it
7 -- television - glory -- track 1 from television's sophomore album. television is punk except with guitar solos and structure. i don't know if they're actually punk but they're very good regardless
8 -- gang of four - guns before butter -- song of of gang of four's defining album, entertainment. gang of four is minimalist punk songs with disco influences
9 -- the wipers - messenger
10 -- mates of state - fraud in the 80s
11 -- badly drawn boy - epitaph
12 -- morphine - shame
13 -- belle and sebastian - the rollercoaster ride

see you next week!

Blender playlist for Thu Jan 25 2-4p

...and I'll be here every Thursday from 2 to 4 :)

Albums that stand out? The new Skinny Puppy is pretty sweet; proof that not all EBM/Darkwave sucks. Same for 2 Bit Pie. Yay for innovation in a typically unimaginative genre. I'm also really feeling the Psychic Ills, some neato fuzzy noise rock thing. Also, both the Infradig and Spaceheater albums I missed somehow, they're from last semester... but oh my god do they kick ass :D One is ninja tune style, the other jazzy hip hop. And lest I forget Reba Hasko and her beautiful voice and love for nontraditional composition.

HAY CAN I WRITE FOR PITCHFORK NOW?

Shauna Burns - Gotta Get Ahead

Blender: the 1/20 fillin show! 4-6pm

A quick note before I post the playlist, I messed up last semester and didn't take the necessary steps that would get me a show this semester. Whoops... but I'm fixing it as fast I can, and hopefully soon I *will* be on the schedule for Spring 2007. But definitely not 4-6 fridays like I used to be, that slot is getting in the way; expect monday, wednesday, or thursday during the day.

This will be my last semester at RPI and hence at WRPI. Thanks to my loyal listeners (I was totally shocked to find out i had loyal listeners). I took a peek at the new music drawer, there is SO MUCH amazing music in there! These last 4 months are gonna be a blast.

Tons of amazing chiptune artists appear: in addition to those above, Glomag, Covox, Role Model, 8-Bit Weapon, and David E Sugar have all created their own Kraftwerk covers. It's great to see these talented musicians, whom I've been into for a few years now, finally get some national attention in the form of a compilation released by Astralwerks.
